Laos is the hidden gem of Southeast Asia, often skipped over on the backpacker trail and certainly overlooked by the average tourist, but the country so much to offer. With stunning landscapes, friendly people and delicious food, Laos quickly became one of my favorite countries! Here are 20 photos to inspire you to visit Laos on your next vacation:
Laos is the hidden gem of mainland Southeast Asia!
I honestly had no idea what to expect when I decided to head into Laos from Northern Thailand. I had heard mixed reviews from other backpackers, some saying that it was boring, while others said it was the most beautiful place they had ever been. Laos really surprised me, not only was it beautiful but the people and culture were amazing.
During my three weeks in Laos, I packed in so many amazing experiences. I swam in the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen in Luang Prabang, tubed down the infamous party river in Vang Vieng, ate countless pastries while strolling the Parisian-inspired boulevards of Vientiane, and spent whole days relaxing in a hammock in the 4000 islands.
One of the most memorable parts of my time in Laos was actually the two-day slow boat journey into the country from Northern Thailand. We spent 6+ hours on the river each day and got to take in so many beautiful sight along the way. I highly recommend it!
If you visit Laos, take the slow boat into the country. The scenery is stunning and it gives you a nice look into Laos culture before you’ve even arrived!
Honestly, I can’t really have a post about Laos and not rave about their food & drink! Beer Lao was hands down my favorite beer in Southeast Asia. It went particularly well with my favorite local food- sticky rice! The locals roll the sticky rice into balls and dip it into various sauces. It’s delicious! Also, the Laotian coffee is phenomenal if you have a sweet tooth. Be sure to give these local options a try if you visit Laos!
